ANNUAL MAINTENANCE

Annual Maintenance Packages For Automatic Standby Generators

Regular maintenance is necessary to ensure that your Automatic Standby Generator is always ready when you need it. Michigan Quality Electric offers scheduled maintenance packages for an additional charge to be sure your generator runs smoothly and safely. If you choose to be a part of our regular maintenance program, we place you on a regular schedule, and when it is time to complete your maintenance, we order the appropriate maintenance kit and call you to get your maintenance appointment on our schedule. No need for you to remember to do it.

Maintenance Needs Vary by Manufacturer and Model of Generator, but Will Typically Include:

  1. Checking the oil level and replacing the oil and the oil filter as needed – timing for changing the oil on a generator will vary based on usage, environment, and type of oil used. Typically, the oil will need to be changed every 150 hours of operation or once a year. It is important to note that checking your oil more frequently is recommended if a generator runs frequently or for a long period due to multiple or prolonged power outages.
  2. Replacing the air filter (if applicable) – a dirty, clogged, or damaged air filter can interfere with generator operation. Air filters should typically be inspected annually and replaced when needed. More frequent inspection and replacement may be necessary for areas with dusty or dirty environments.
  3. Inspecting the spark plugs (unless you have a diesel generator) – spark plugs should be inspected and cleaned annually and replaced when they show wear and tear.
  4. Inspecting the belts and hoses for wear or cracks – our technicians will inspect the belts and hoses for cracks and review any concerns with you so that manufacturer-approved replacement parts can be ordered if needed.
  5. Cleaning or replacing the fuel filter - a dirty, clogged, or damaged air filter can interfere with generator operation. Fuel filters should typically be inspected annually and replaced when needed. More frequent inspection and replacement may be necessary for areas with dusty or dirty environments.
  6. Checking the coolant level – coolant will need to be added or replaced as needed.
  7. Inspecting the battery and cables for corrosion – batteries, and cables need to be checked annually. Corrosion can sometimes be cleaned up, and excessive corrosion may indicate that the battery needs to be replaced, as does a battery with a weak charge.

Regular maintenance is the best way to ensure your generator is ready when needed. It is also important for you to regularly visually inspect the generator, noticing if regular test cycles are running, whether there are any error indicator lights showing, any leaking or build up on or around the generator, and if there is any physical damage to the generator or debris interfering with air circulation around the generator.
